I’m running mostly out of fear these days …
The last time I ran 10km was in 1982, when I was in re-hab from my first knee surgery. I think they’re making kilometres longer these days ….
After a couple of test runs on trails with my Kangoos, I’ve discovered that they really only work on pavement. Anything softer and you lose the rebound advantage – then you’re just running with weights on your feet. Still, for me it’s better than running shoes alone. So I went out to Burnaby Lake yesterday to try them on the trail there (where the run will be on Sunday).
I did 9.5 km (slowly) and it seemed okay. It’s really hard on the knees, ironically. When you hit any uneven ground – whether it’s a bump or stones in loose gravel – the running platform twists. Your ankles can’t twist because they’re locked into the boots – so the torque goes up to the knees. Luckily, I buy my Advil in bulk!
It’s a pretty place – though I never did see the lake! There’s too much ground cover between the trails and the water – crazy.
Stay tuned for post-race pictures on Sunday!
